The primary difficulties people face when performing Kegel exercises often stem from a few key issues that aren’t always obvious at first. One of the biggest challenges is simply doing the exercise incorrectly—especially when someone unintentionally engages the wrong muscles. Instead of isolating the pelvic floor, many people end up tightening their glutes, inner thighs, or lower abdominals, which not only reduces the effectiveness of the exercise but can also create unnecessary tension in other parts of the body.

Pre-existing Muscle Tightness
There are individuals whose pelvic floor issues stem from already-tight muscles, performing more Kegel contractions can worsen their symptoms. In such cases, the focus should be on learning muscle relaxation techniques. Yeah at first I had this because I don’t have a trainer who can supervise what I’m doing.

From my experienced, If you are unsure about your technique or experience pain or worsening symptoms, consult a healthcare provider or a specially trained pelvic floor physical therapist. They may use techniques like biofeedback to ensure you are using the correct muscles.

Practicing while urinating: While this can help you find the muscles, doing it regularly can interfere with normal bladder emptying and increase the risk of urinary tract infections (UTIs). Yes it is, I don’t recommend doing this.

Not suitable for all conditions: Kegels may be less effective for certain issues like overflow incontinence or some nerve damage cases. Individuals who have major surgery should avoid it.

Incorrect Technique

The most common difficulty is failing to isolate the pelvic floor muscles. Many people mistakenly contract their:

  • Abdomen
  • Buttocks
  • Thighs
  • Back

Contracting these other muscles puts more pressure on the pelvic floor and can make the exercises ineffective or worsen symptoms. Holding your breath instead of breathing normally is also a common mistake.

Lack of immediate results: Improvement can take several weeks or months of consistent practice, which may lead to discouragement and giving up. Most people like to see results right away.

Overworking the Muscles
Doing too many Kegels or not allowing complete relaxation between contractions can lead to overly tight or tense pelvic floor muscles (known as a hypertonic pelvic floor). This tightness is not the same as strength and can lead to its own set of problems, including:

  • Increased pelvic pain
  • Pain during sexual intercourse or tampon insertion
  • Difficulty or straining with urination and bowel movements
  • Increased urinary urgency or leakage

I specifically choose LoTs to deal with healing, though I abuse somehow.
