Dark and satirical. Gratuitous video game style violence. And a solid mix of characters with good development over the series. I never played the game so can’t comment on the adaptation.
His Dark Materials (2019-22)
The fact that they managed to adapt the third book which was considered unadaptable by the fans is itself the testament to how good this series is.
It’s a ride
Faust, Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau, 1926
If you are looking for dramatic, but strikingly different aesthetics German silent expressionistic films are a great inspiration.
Zen like meditative movie
The Scorpion King (2002)
I remember having a major crush on Kelly Hu when I first watched The Scorpion King.
Such a cute classic!
I never understood why not more stories of Dahl were adapted. Especially the rather dark short ones (like “Pig”) would be great basis for feature films.
(Sadly the Netflix films are more Wes Anderson than Roald Dahl films.)
One of my favorite movies. Any movies that encourages a love of reading books is a good movie in my book (pun intended).
Also great characters including the “villains”.

Good movies now are the exception rather than the rule.
Sadly very true.
IIRC Netflix snapped up all film and TV rights from the Dahl estate but will concentrate on his childrens books.
“Pig” & Co. would be perfect for small indy studios but will probably never be developed.
