Iâm not a huge Lord of the Rings fan but always liked this quote:
Itâs about adversity and acceptance of unchosen circumstances.
Donât waste energy wishing life were different.
Focus on how you can use the time and circumstances you do have.
Greatness emerges when people rise to challenges they never wanted.
What makes this quote even more powerful is JRR Tolkien fought in WW1. He was at the Battle of the Somme, which was one of the most brutal battles in the war. He experienced the horrors of trench warfare.
So this quote was not written from philosophical stance, but from the firsthand experience of a man who survived one of historyâs darkest times.

âSpiritual bypassing is a term I coined to describe a process I saw happening in the Buddhist community I was in, and also in myself. Although most of us were sincerely trying to work on ourselves, I noticed a widespread tendency to use spiritual ideas and practices to sidestep or avoid facing unresolved emotional issues, psychological wounds, and unfinished developmental tasks. When we are spiritually bypassing, we often use the goal of awakening or liberation to rationalize what I call premature transcendence: trying to rise above the raw and messy side of our humanness before we have fully faced and made peace with it. And then we tend to use absolute truth to disparage or dismiss relative human needs, feelings, psychological problems, relational difficulties, and developmental deficits. I see this as an âoccupational hazardâ of the spiritual path, in that spirituality does involve a vision of going beyond our current karmic situation.â â John Welwood

Most people have heard of the saying âwhen the student is ready, the teacher appearsâ. Itâs incomplete because it doesnât factor in that it goes both ways. That every interaction or relationship with any entity (not just people but systems as well) is a collaborative creation. The perfect key fits into the grooves of the perfect lock, but the perfect lock is shaped by the edges of the perfect key. Whatever powerlessness, blaming, accountability, sentiment, morality, conscious negotiation, agency, emotion or meaning you project onto that objective law of symmetry, does not change the fact that it exists. If the key is even 1% off in symmetry, then it doesnât fit into the lock. Victim mentality tends to overlook this, lol. They think itâs all about âfaultâ (a linear, one-sided model), when its all about fit (a two-sided symmetry). The key isnât âwrongâ for not fitting, and the lock isnât âbadâ for not accepting it. Itâs simply a matter of alignment. Being able to recognize that is the first step to getting back your power. If you start looking inward, becoming aware of what youâre aligned with (consciously or subconsciously), and begin choosing differently - then you open up the possibility of new experiences, people, and systems to collaboratively create with.
