Understanding Power

Power is the ability to impart your will upon reality.

Now, there are types and forms of power and they all work in synergy as they may not be truly independent of each other. Which then, begs the desire for balance and harmony.

Types of Power
There are two types of power

  1. Internal power: The power that is within. Mostly esoteric and it is so, because not many people choose to understand it.

  2. External power: This is the type of power we can easily observe in the external world. It is the type of power generally understood as power.

Forms
Each type of power also has its forms.

Internal power

  • Dominion/Dominance/Authority: I understand this mostly as the mindset that directly enables an individual to mold reality and guide outcomes. Major expressions of this are willpower, mental strength, confidence etc.

  • Internal energy: I understand this as the amount of energy within a body. Major markers for this are physical health and state.

  • Mental (the proper term for this still eludes me): The actual understanding of the nature of the self, reality and existence. Major markers for this are congruence, speed and effort in manifestation.

External power
The major makers of this type of power is status - which then depends on the form being expressed.

  • Financial: In simple terms, this is the amount of wealth controlled by an individual/entity.

  • Social Influence: In simple terms, this is the ability to communicate and rally/move people towards a cause/outcome.

  • Physicality/Violence: To be more clearly put - the ability to enact violence.

  • Intelligence: The acquisition and application of information, knowledge and skills. It also comes in different forms (cue in Limitless copy) including strategy and creativity.

Having a higher baseline of any form of power comes with the advantage that it makes it easier to improve the other forms.

However, power also has its own risks:

  1. Imbalance of forms of power
  • Attracting the wrong/harmful attention
  • Trying to manifest but bounded by creativity
  • Baron that cannot protect his empire
  • Celebrity with imposter syndrome
  1. How they are wielded
  • Trying to guide/manifest a harmful outcome
  • Possibility of losing control
  • Misuse/abuse
  • The possibility of getting drunk on power

This is my current understanding of power and it will not be perfect. Wanted to put this in my journal, but thought it better to start a new thread as I’d like more varied contributions and opinions on this.

[Edit]: Changed enforce to impart in the definition of power, as enforce depicts the use of force to accomplish your will.

The ability to exercise one’s will over any situation, you need to cultivate self-awareness… you’ll be able to analyze your strength and weakness…

…with determination and persistence, you need not worry about risks of having power.

Is will solely comprised of conscious intentions? Or is it comprised of both conscious and subconscious intentions?

:fire: Love this post. I’ll write you a tiny dissertation in the morning.

Good question.

I think it comprises of both, and the more aligned they are, the better.

So if:

Will being comprised of both conscious and subconscious intentions.

The more aligned they are, the easier it is to enforce.

Is it safe to say that power is directly correlated to the alignment of conscious and subconscious intentions?

It should be, as the more clarity of will (alignment between conscious and subconscious), the easier it will be to impart said will.

The thing that sticks out to me in this definition, is “your will”.

Does that make your definition of power, subjective in a sense? Since it depends on the individual’s will, which is influenced by their unique conscious and subconscious intentions?

Does this mean that power, according to your definition, can’t really be compared unless the conscious and subconscious intentions are identical?

More good questions. I’ll have to think for a while to answer these.

It won’t make it subjective.

Does it correlate? Sure, but I won’t say it depends on it. When you use the word depends it will mean that power is determined by or reliant on the will, and that isn’t true.

The will is what is being imparted and power is simply the ability to do so.

For example, if you see a log of wood in your yard and for whatever reason, you decide to throw it over your fence, you deciding to throw the log is your will and you actually being able to throw the log is your power.

And yes your ability to throw the log can be measured, as it is a measure of strength

Also, let’s see another example.

The story of M&A
Two guys M & A consciously wants to hit the gym to get fit as they think that would be good for their physical health, but subconsciously, they really don’t want to go through the stress of doing exercises.

Now, every time they want to go to the gym, there is always an excuse not to go.

Now, M forces himself to go or puts himself in a situation where he has to go. This is his willpower at work - his ability to make himself go to the gym regardless of the odds.

While A, still wanting to go, however, doesn’t force himself to go. This is also his willpower at play here.

Moving into the future.

Same guy M, has hit the gym for some time, put on some muscles and actually liked the way he felt after workouts. But, life happened and he stopped going to the gym.

Now, consciously M wants to go to the gym as he thinks it’s about time he got back in shape. Subconsciously, M can’t wait to feel that exercise high at the gym anymore. M just had a stressful day at work, however, when it’s time to go, he simply picks his gym stuff and goes there.

Going to the gym is still his will and his ability to actually hit the gym regardless of his stressful day is still his willpower at play. Except this time, it’s easier as his conscious and subconscious are aligned.

As for A, he still has the same mental construct he had since the beginning, but still hasn’t hit the gym.

Now, between M & A, who would you say has a stronger willpower?

Giving more thought to your question here

I would say the type and form(s) of power being expressed is dependent on the nature of the will (intention).

I agree with your understanding @Goldfinger . This is my unstructured ass post. I apologize for delay; I’m dealing with some personal issues (career matters and quitting nicotine again). I want to structure this post into my musings on power, experience from a military standpoint, what I witnessed in foreign affairs (diplomatic and military), power by generations, etc. My stance on power at this point, is that it’s very much needed in life. I don’t trust anyone really because I know I myself am a faulty human, and therefore I make mistakes and I cannot be 100% trusted either. So I afford everyone a minimum level of trust and add or subtract from there, and that is the reason I believe wielding power is justified in itself. To protect and defend our interests.

Dominance is not power itself. It is a state of being, a status, and also a way in which power is used.
