Ofcourse Saturn devouring his son out of fear of a prophecy by that one of his children would overthrow him

Saturn again now painted by
Francisco Goya
who in his later years became deaf and resorted into living most of the time in his old house. When he died they found out that he used to also paint on walls of his rooms. It was mostly disturbing images - Saturn being one of them

And ofcourse Raphael’s School of Athens which depicts all of the most important and iconic ancient philosophers from history. Its kind of like ultimate fanart of philosophers in one huge piece.

Plato and Aristotle are featured in the center

there are also

  • Socrates
  • Pythagoras
  • Archimedes
  • Heraclitus
  • Zarathustra
  • Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo are believed to be portrayed through Plato and Heraclitus, respectively
  • Raphael included a self-portrait beside Ptolemy

Depiction of Socrates before his death ( he was ordered by the state to poison himself ) as he is telling his students ( who wish for him to escape instead )

Socrates defines death as the separation of the soul from the body - total cessation of sensation and therefore - pain. As he said "death is not to be feared, but to be welcomed.
