Habits that separate the Boys from Men

1. Taking Responsibility
Understand the importance of taking responsibility for your actions and decisions.

Habit goes beyond simply admitting when you are wrong; it involves owning up to the consequences of your choices and working to make amends. Never make excuses or blame others for your circumstances. Instead, face challenges head-on and use these experiences as learning opportunities.

By taking responsibility, you build credibility and trust with others, which is foundational for any meaningful relationship.

This practice fosters maturity and accountability, setting the stage for personal and professional growth.

2. Developing Self-Discipline
Self-discipline is a cornerstone habit that men cultivate in all areas of life.

You set clear, achievable goals and establish effective routines to reach them. This involves prioritizing long-term benefits over short-term pleasures, such as maintaining a healthy lifestyle, managing finances wisely, or advancing in their careers. By mastering self-discipline, you’ll develop the ability to stay focused and resilient in the face of distractions and setbacks.

This habit empowers you to make consistent progress toward your aspirations, ultimately leading to a more fulfilled and purposeful life.

3. Seeking Continuous Growth
Men are committed to personal growth and lifelong learning.

You actively seek new knowledge, skills, and experiences, understanding that growth is a continuous process. You embrace challenges and step out of your comfort zones to push your boundaries.

These habits includes reading, attending workshops, learning new hobbies, or seeking mentorship.

By constantly pushing yourself to improve, you’ll become more adaptable and innovative, capable of navigating an ever-changing world. This commitment to growth not only enhances your own life but also positively impacts those around you.

4. Cultivating Emotional Intelligence
Emotional intelligence is crucial for building strong, meaningful relationships.

Men develop self-awareness, allowing them to understand their emotions and the impact they have on others.

They regulate their emotions effectively, ensuring that their reactions are appropriate and constructive. By empathizing with others, they build deeper connections and navigate social complexities with ease.

Effective communication and mature conflict resolution are key aspects of this habit, fostering an environment of mutual respect and understanding.

5. Showing Respect
Real men treat others with respect, regardless of their background or status.

You listen attentively, value different perspectives, and treat everyone with dignity.

This habit is about recognizing the inherent worth of every individual and behaving in ways that reflect this understanding.

Respect is earned through actions, not demanded, and men who consistently show respect build strong, supportive networks both personally and professionally.

6. Practicing Integrity
Integrity involves upholding high moral and ethical standards.

Men who practice integrity act with honesty, honor, and consistency in their personal and professional lives.

You value trust and are true to their word, ensuring that their actions align with their values and principles. This habit builds a reputation of reliability and respect, fostering trust and admiration from others.

7. Embracing Leadership
Leadership is not just about holding positions of power; it’s about taking initiative and inspiring others.

Men who embrace leadership make decisions confidently, take responsibility for their outcomes, and motivate those around them to achieve their full potential. They lead by example, demonstrating the behaviors and attitudes they wish to see in others.

This habit involves empowering others, contributing positively to families, workplaces, and communities, and striving to create a better environment for all.

Incorporating these habits transforms boys into men by fostering maturity, responsibility, and the ability to positively influence their surroundings.

Centurion
Roman Centurions were the backbone of the Roman military, holding a prestigious yet perilous position. Chosen for their merit, experience, and leadership skills rather than noble birth, they commanded respect from their troops. According to Polybius, the highest-ranking Centurions commanded the right and left sides of their unit, respectively.

Leading from the front, Centurions faced significant risks and high casualty rates, but their courage, discipline, and resilience were essential to the army’s effectiveness. They were required to maintain discipline and hold their ground under pressure, demonstrating exceptional leadership qualities.

Despite the challenges and hazards, the role of Centurion offered higher pay compared to regular soldiers and the opportunity to prove one’s valor and leadership abilities on the battlefield. For those willing to face the dangers of battle and uphold rigorous standards, being a Centurion could be both challenging and rewarding.

The path to becoming a Centurion was not easy, but it was a testament to the individual’s dedication, skill, and bravery. These leaders played a crucial role in the success and expansion of the Roman Empire, inspiring their men to fight with courage and determination in the face of adversity.

In one of the festival in our city I choose to dress up like a centurion.

  • To win any BATTLE, you must fight as if you are ALREADY DEAD.
    Miyamoto Musashi

A samurai must put forward his best efforts to win a battle. And in order to give his best, he must never think of the possibility of defeat at the hands of the enemy. Occasional best efforts are not good enough to ensure victory. The warrior must be at his best at all times.

In the battlefield, occasional best efforts are not good enough to win over business competitors either. Entrepreneurs must remain at the top of their game at all times, because the moment they let go, even for a split second, they will surely be overwhelmed by competitors. Why? Because in the digital age one will wait for you and things move at the speed of thought on the internet.

In the end Strategy, product planning and design, marketing, human resources, finance, and every other business function can draw a few lessons from the samurai. Their absolute devotion to their way of life, the expertise with weapons, resilience, strong personality, attitude towards victory, and the humility to keep learning every day can prove to be useful lessons for startup entrepreneurs.

The single biggest virtue of the samurai warrior was honor, and startup entrepreneurs must not forget that if they want to be truly successful in every arena of life.

This quote was also meantioned to a soldier in the TV series, “Band of Brothers.”

The soldier, Blithe, was suffering from fear and battlefield “blindness.” He explains that he hid in a ditch on the morning of D-Day. Here’s the exchange.

Officer: “You know why you hid in that ditch, Blithe?”

Blithe: “Because I was scared.”

Officer: “We’re all scared. You hid in that ditch because you think there’s still hope. But Blithe, the only hope you have is to accept the fact that you’re already dead. And the sooner you accept that, the sooner you’ll be able to function as a soldier is supposed to function. The whole war depends on it.”

If you’re already “dead”, you won’t make stupid decisions out of fear, but will use the strategies which will cripple the enemy’s effectiveness most. Even at cost of life (better calculation of the greater good decisions), less hesitation to fight with all you have. when you happen to survive your victory, all the better, but it’s not the primary goal, winning, defeating the enemy is.

Hence when you anticipate death, and made your peace, your mind is unoccupied while fighting.

I am conscious of having different personalities, but this was before I listened to major titles.

When I begin to socialize with the world I often noticed I can forget what I done.

Last weekend I spent few hours at the firing range and I didn’t noticed the spend rounds and only noticed people are quite surprise looking at me. I talk to my aunt and refer me to a psychologist and their was a long evaluation. I was told that experiencing shifts in personality or mood over time is normal for most people, particularly during periods of significant life changes, it could be due to stress, or emotional development. Factors such as age, environment, relationships, and personal experiences can all contribute to these changes.

However, if the shifts are extreme, cause distress, or interfere with your daily life, it might be helpful to speak with a mental health professional. To help explore these feelings more deeply and provide support for managing them. It isn’t extreme in my case, I never carry firearm like I used before.

I thought I had a Dissociative identity disorder (DID) which according to a book, is a mental health condition where you have two or more separate personalities that control your behavior at different times. When personalities switch, you’ll have gaps in your memory. The identities are usually caused by living through trauma.

I sometimes I do forget things, I love solving mathematical problems in my mind most of the time.

I had this routine every weekends teaching kids karate, and I was having a historical conversation with the janitor because I was asking if theirs someone who is using the gym lately, and he said no and keep reminding me that it was just me. He talks cautiously (nervously) while describing what he saw, it was only me who kick that bag. The bag was heavily damage, but I never saw any of my feet having bruises - I forgot that part that I was practicing.

Talking with a mental health professional, he said it could be an introjection (also known as identification or internalization) is the unconscious adoption of the thoughts or personality traits of others. It occurs as a normal part of development.

I saw what happen at the firing range and the performance is way above when I’m still on active duty.

I talk to the staff at the gym including the janitor who saw me that if they will caught me with an unusual behavior please call my doctor.

I taught karate for kids in a mission to direct their focus out of social media and teach them to remain human. Well the place become bigger and crowded. This is a long way from the city. I love it here because it is quite and conducive to learning.

What does it takes to become legendary?
Maybe the kids had told their parents or their buddies about this little karate school that other martial school begun putting their school beside our school. I can see the Taekwondo, KungFu (I’m not sure if this is the real one), Aikido, Muay Thai, there is this Japanese wooden sword with an armor, the difference was the adults has a thundering shouts while we had a squeaking sound - but the kids are exciting.

I get rid of the old used kimono and had my own tailored kimono instead.Besides the belts color I add a confidence badge of nature and animals to make the kids appreciate them and hopefully to care for the environment.

My mom learned that I was teaching karate secretly but she was very happy that I did. She share me an album of me wearing a kimono and dong the kata. I was three years old. She told me that I was so clumsy but everyone loves the idea that I join the adults.

Real change starts from within

What I really appreciate on martial arts is not the number of years I trained, or the number of people I bring down, the belts, awards, trophies - it was when I stop to listen to advises from great men.

I dislike the idea of Tai chi, Aikido, because I though they are intended for old people or for women. Most people decide to learn martial arts so they can defend themselves.

The true essence of martial arts is the journey of continuous self-improvement mentally, physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Learning a martial art form can improve so many aspects of life, including our mental, physical, and emotional health - gain confidence, physical strength, more self-control, and self-awareness.

I get serious with martial arts because I felt defeated, my brothers are much taller, stronger, and bigger than me. I’m jealous and I trained hard to prove to the world that I can hurt anyone, whenever I want it. But then I realize I’ve been chasing things that keeps moving away from me. It’s kind of fighting something invincible that can’t die.

I found out that when we focus on improving our self, everything we want will come to us.

We attract based on who we are, not what we want.

I was asked by other martial arts practitioner how do I do it - why many kids wants to learn from me whereas they have a lot of things to show to the world that are indeed legit while I don’t. I had a clean space with plants, foam, water dispenser, calm music but I also talk to the kids about family things that’s what makes me different from them.

If we spend our time scaring people, obviously they will run away from you, but if we spend our time doing good things, people will come to you.

True power does not seek attention.

It does not rush to prove itself or demand recognition. It exists in the quiet confidence of preparation, the discipline of patience, and the clarity of knowing when to act.

Strength is not just about movement but about the wisdom to wait, to observe, and to move with intention.

In a time that rewards urgency, the virtues of patience and stability are often overlooked. But these qualities bear fruits that last—outcomes that are not fleeting but sustainable.

While many chase quick success, those who plan ahead understand that the real rewards come from precision and foresight. Thoughtful actions create foundations that stand the test of time.

Rash decisions crumble under pressure.

The pressure to act quickly can be overwhelming.

Society teaches that success belongs to those who never pause, who move fast, who chase without hesitation. But movement without direction is chaos.

Reacting to every impulse, every distraction, and every challenge does not build strength—it scatters energy, leaving no room for mastery. The most valuable trait is not just the ability to act, but the discipline to know when to act.

Control is not about force but about understanding.

Not every situation demands a response. Not every moment requires action. Those who react to everything are controlled by everything. Those who cultivate patience and foresight dictate their own path.

The strongest are not the ones who chase every opportunity but the ones who recognize the right one when it comes—and move with precision.

Let others mistake stillness for inaction, patience for passivity. Their perception is not reality.

Those who prepare, who plan, who wait with intention are the ones who ultimately succeed—not just momentarily, but in ways that endure.

True power is not in urgency, but in the quiet discipline that ensures when the time comes, the action taken is one that truly matters.

I had found a name for the little kids karate school that I created, “Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon”. And after all those months hiding from people the owner of the place finally discover the real me. He told me that he knows my grandparents a lot including my dad, and I give him a grin. Where all good, I just don’t want too much popularity.

I need a name because most people think this school is a day care center. And just because all of my students are adorable, amazing, awesome, and cute does not mean they don’t deserved a good name.

A couple blocks from the Dojo, is another martial arts school and I was invited to visit them. It’s nice to mingle around with people who had the same interest. One of the instructor asked me what I am teaching and I said karate, then asked what style (I would like to joke ‘doogie style’) but the person is quite serious, so I simply told him it was for the kids. I bring back the question to him, ‘what are you teaching here?’ and the other person responded, it’s ‘Silat’ - it’s similar to krav maga and not for kids. They give me a tour on the place in which I didn’t regret because I wanted to transform my Dojo into a conducive for learning to kids, I want it to be safe and fun.

Their place reminds me of grandpa’s farm, they have this modern punching bag heavy but soft. While on the place where I used to train, first a banana stalk, then a coconut trunk wrapped with a rope, then an empty acetylene tank wrapped with little bag stuff with sands. And wooden slab for punching. Nature was my audience, the farm animals where the judges. While grandma was my doctor, she tend on my wounds.

I remember in my teens I fought this ‘Ong Bak’ fighter (they have a unique style, trained for kicking and using their knees for fighting) they have pretty nice dance work. When we get to fight, he intentionally asked me to hit him on his side, maybe testing my kick. There are vulnerable spots on our body and no matter how we trained for years it’s not going to harden like steel. So I gave him a kick on his side then he falls like a log.

I love to see people trained on the gym, lot of dancing foot work but unfortunately the thing stays at the gym-only as if they are intended for stamina training and not for real combat. And at the ring they always misses a hit, they always gets hit. Probably because they only trained at the physical level never going beyond within.

I can still remember when I was badly hit on my head, and as the blood streaming down my face, I couldn’t see the opponent anymore (in our times the referee won’t stop the fight just because you have blood on you, the fight will go on until the judges or the people who pays for the fight says it’s over). I remember my master told me that the body needs the mind to become stronger, I had to go within - I had to go beyond to become invincible and when I closed my eyes my other senses becomes active as if I become an animal, I can sense the opponent without looking at him, sensing his fear, his breath, his movement. I engulfed the whole place with my warrior’s aura, guarantee to claim harm to my opponent which I already claimed as prey. I trained to harden my mind first not just the body. This what makes my attack a very concussive blow to an opponent. Those are my past.

We are invited to participate on a Martial Exhibition, I carefully read the letter as I am representing kids and not adults. We will be presenting a Kata, it is a choreographed or pre-determined patterns of movements, practiced solo or with a partner, in various martial arts disciplines around the world. Included on the events are clubs in Karate, Taekwondo, Kung Fu, Wing Chun, Filipino Martial Arts, Iaido, and Aikido. And also Kendo Kata, they are fixed patterns that teach kendoka (kendo practitioners) the basic elements of swordsmanship.

The events happens only once a year, it was stop during the pandemic and this year was almost postponed due to less attendance. I asked the parents if it is alright to go ahead with the exhibition, and they all said yes without hesitation. The kids are more than eager to show their nice uniforms with the logo for, “Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon”.

I was very happy to met the goal of this dojo, which is to shift the kids focus on gadgets and social media - the objective was to make kids play, learn on their natural environment.

Although I have no intention to earn a living on this teaching-karate, I did earned a lot and I decide to used the earnings to improve the dojo. Not only the kids learns to fight a little but also camaraderie and I did not expect parents are eager to learn from their kids, I had an exclusive session for parents to learn to handle their kids sparring.

I wanted to reach out to other areas to promote this activity. I asked my social media group to create a private channel catering this dojo and they shared a particular recurring request to allow teens to enroll.

I know the older group will be much different from the kids, I refuse them since I don’t have the space (they would require a large area) and I don’t have the instructor to handle them. And then there is this much older group (grandparents) who personally came to me asking to enroll and offer to pay more. I didn’t say anything but I will think about it.

Probably I will be teaching Aikido and Judo.

Not only I fix the problem on shifting the kids attention over gadgets unhealthy habits but I also provide the locals with job opportunities. The local town chieftain had thank me for what I did.

Something wonderful has happen, I said that my goal was to shift the children focus on gadget into a more productive way - and karate is one of them. Now the adults are stepping up to joined in, at first I am reluctant on the decision since they want to have a much larger space - a table for them to chat, a locker room, shower or small comfort room, etc. but this is my wish that somehow I wanted the people to find their senses to spend time with nature rather than on gadget and be more like human beings.

Tai Chi Chuan now becomes part of out Dojo - Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. Now the kids gets to experienced the real tea party but I replace the tea with milk. One thing a like about this group is that they never gets tired (I mean their energy is overflowing) but they move slow because of their age.

I had a second decision to expand the Dojo and my small-space rentals knowledge comes into effect. I made used of prefabricated walls for building the expansion and expect within a day it will be done.

The funding for this particular project is with me. Happy for them.

I have an urgent text from our Dojo, ‘You need to have a mediator, now’, I was thinking different because I have a martial art school for the kids and maybe the other school are against it, but I was wrong. Following the text and then calls from the parents of the kids (the parents relayed that to me, ‘grandpa smells bad’, ‘I don’t want to talk to them…’). The kids don’t like to share the space with grown ups. I have a brotherly talk with them and empowering them with the decision regarding our school, they also don’t want them (grown ups) to used the Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon as their group name. I went to the other side to talk to the grown ups, they change their name, ‘Dragon Warrior’ - hoping it will be settled.

The dragon warrior occupy the upper portion of the site while the kids at the center (lower part). Now the middle is starting to form, only five of them showed up (I don’t want too much of their attendance as there are other school who offered the same martial art style) but I was very happy to have this thing.

The goal was to have kids love martial arts instead of being hook with electronics gadgets, and now I have another breakthrough, teens are coming and enrolling martial arts. Other martial art school are more than happy, though they can’t expand due to limited space they have. They love it having me as their own ambassador, I become the accidental spoke person.

Noting this energy was contagious, imagine I signed up for this kind of thing to solve the problem about kids being hook on electronics, choosing to hide it on a remote area, and now it become a sensation.

We have an unofficial meeting with the other martial art school about future plans and part of that was friendly competition and participation to national shows, and they keep on asking for my social media account so they can liked or follow me. I decline on that social media part - only a few of them knows the real me and I don’t want to be popular, those things are past and I just want to help. I suggest that they make a social page instead, but I am taking notes of my popularity though - parents and kids always want that I was part of their training and every time they took a picture I was their for them. Sooner people will be asking about this guy.

My social media account is locked or no activity.

It was summer, my summer has a hectic schedule - I have less time for my girl friends.

I am preparing for a triathlon in which I am one of the sponsor - the hidden goal was to make people become aware of the environment and the sport is just a pretension. The vanishing forest and unusual small fires, stinky heat, etc.

A lot of people have sign up for summer class, I decided to join another exhibition with the kids after a meeting with there parents. The kids loves the prearrange action sequence in which they keep practicing with their own parents. I kind love the interaction with their parents and every session has lots of surprises. I put up a good rule on grown up not to trespass the kids corner as they (as I saw it in CCTV) bully the kids.

As I mingle around with other groups I noticed the martial arts names are new, the style are different - I think due to evolution - they decide what is best for a street fights.

I was invited to join in, me as a sponsor again - this is my first fight wearing a body armor. There are safety officer - they wanted to have a good fight with less or zero injury. I want this because it aligns with my goals which is to shift the kids, teens or grown up from gadgets to martial arts.

I have no one else to share my case but this journal.

I was very happy that I met the objective on creating martial arts school for kids, then for old people, then for abled bodies but I didn’t know it anticipate it to be very big.

The kids has 180 and recently I saw sign up to be increasing daily, I have to asked other club to accept them. I don’t have problems with the old even I sponsor all their activities. We call them the grand master thought most of them move like a snail but they are all healthy.

Now the teens, they wanted that the brand name don’t dictate want they wanted - no more of those obvious names, taewondo, kempo, majority wants mixed martial arts.

I met part of my objectives but can’t accommodate them all, but I am excited that I have shifted there minds to towards what it makes us humans, not hook to gadgets.

I bought several fighting dummies for the kids, mats for the olds, and a company wants to study body armor for commercial application.

I have this scheduled fight on which I am a sponsor and a fighter. The purpose was for us (judges, fighter, more sponsors, more people) to develop a plan, a framework) for a safe fights in the future.)

I will be wearing for the first time in my life a thin body armor with a lot of sensors connected to a computer and monitored with lots of cameras. They wanted to determined if a fight is fake or how may hits or what part is being hit, etc. After this it will only be the cameras that will analyze the fight soon.

I bought extra buses for the kids, more healthy foods, including for the grand master as the old become more demanded and wants ‘conditions’ over rules, but it is alright for me.

The friendly fight ends abruptly - we are both excited to try the new way of fighting with the latest technology. I had this body glove (not an armor as I previous mentioned, it like a diver wet suit but much lighter - it has lots of sensor on it and possibly according to what I heard from their tech - connected via Bluetooth or hybrid technologies.

My opponent an instructor from a nearby club was doing his foot work (maybe to intimidate me), a kickboxing type of predictable dance on a ring, then I launch a high side kick on the air in-front of him - not intended to hit him and he took that chance to see the opening but he didn’t realize the legs are much longer than the arms, immediately I change the kick into a returning frontal kick into his shoulder while floating on the air, shifting my body weight to the kick.

Knock out and I rush out towards him to see if his alright.

The proposed fight system is very good, it will some how remove the ring - if a fighter leaves the boundary then on certain duration he needs to make a decision to return otherwise the fight is over. The body glove (also planning to invests on it) has a property to behave as a body armor that will limit injury to the user.

The installed smart cameras can simulate both fighters to analyze the fight (including a fake fight) and can be used for investigation to verify if this is indeed a good fight.

The safety rules is too strict.
