I basically have a doctorate in mumble rap so I do understand the large majority of the lyrics, but even if your conscious mind chooses to reject it it only takes so many replays before it basically turns into an affirmation and brute-forces its way into your mental programming. This isn’t the case for the vast majority of listeners though, so the lack of that buffer is awful for them.
Rap of the last decade is the clearest example, but honestly it’s virtually every genre of music that’s dominated with toxic lyrics nowadays.
And this influence is so much worse for children too. Thank God that my favorite band that I was obsessed with and grew up with are actually known for excellent lyricism, because they had a monumental impact on who I am and the way I think even to this day. Imagine the kids that grow up to Drake and Future’s lyrics, the programming is absurd.
