Develop URGENCY for success

How to develop a sense of URGENCY?

How to become OBSESSED with success?

There are rare individuals who are truly unstoppable… They come and could work 100 hours if needed. They never have “bad” days, they never procrastinate. They have a sort of urgency that pushes them through all obstacles, all emotions, all fatigue. They are OBSESSED with success. They developed an urgency to succeed.

For example, Harvey Specter would be a fictional character that fits that description. I am sure @SaintSovereign is one too, at least was one in his “wild” days.

I always thought it has to do with passion, not knowing what one wants in life. But I know my purpose, I have a clear vision of what I love and want to do. But I am missing this urgency. Maybe it has to do with the fact that I do not have a negative motivation (for example, proving people wrong).

Everybody knows that Harvey Specter wants to WIN, but WHY does he have such an urgency to do so? He loves his work but that is not what makes him obsess about it…

Competition itself, prowess, money and it gives him his confidence and excitement/thrill(the reward of taking the risk - he also loves gambling). I don’t believe it is that deep.

The last season reveals what he cares about most and truly motivates him, and that is doing good work for other people, which is why he joins Mike in the end.

It kind of reminds me of playing soccer when I was a kid. When playing against the other team we wanted to win, it gave us urgency, and it made us obsessed with wanting to win(all the fighting and bickering LOL). I think if you would hack it, then I would say all parts of you have to be congruent with what you want, and you have to fuel it each time, like when playing a competitive match.

I contemplated about it more… I think it has to do with the fact that Harvey knows exactly who he is who he isn’t. WINNING became party of his identity.

“The odds were stacked against me. I won anyway - because I WIN.”

“I am not the guy who gives you a hug when you scared, I am the guy who wins if you need it the most”

Still not explaining why he has such an urgency to succeed in the first place though.

Interesting

Harvey: “When I was a kid my father put me in boxing camp. They make you do a 100 labs and 50 pull ups. They push you until you either threw up or passed out - or both. Anyone could leave at any point, all you had to do is quit.”

Mike: “Let me guess you did not quit.”

Harvey: “I quit every goddamn day, I just never said it out loud. Because no way was I gonna give them the satisfaction of breaking me.”

I remember the scene where Harvey was young and he played his first big baseball match. He wanted to win so badly to impress his father - (and he did win). Then when he found out only his mother was there he became really upset at her. Blaming her… I guess at such an age that is where you develop your identity for a big part.

So I would actually say that his desire to win was a way to earn validation from his father.

I haven’t figured this 100 % out yet, but I think that considering your own mortality on a regular basis is a big key to success.

When you understand that you’re going to die sooner than you would like, you stop wasting a lot of time and dedicate yourself to what is important.

btw. I don’t think that this is true. Everybody has these tendencies, but some people just snap out if it very fast.

Makes sense as he is a narcissist. This might not be healthy but that type of negative motivation pushes such people to greatness. Really need to study narcissism and how to recreate some of their features.

My opinion: If you’re in this forum, you already have all the urgency you need to succeed!

Going to start reading Relentless by Tom Grover:

The Wisdom of Psychopaths by Kevin Dutton:

And rereading The Alter Ego by Todd Herman:

Emperor Q did this for me

IMO- Urgency comes from desire+clarity+time frame (even if death is the time frame)

maintaining performance comes from the below

This would need to be refined but some attributes/items that I believe going into making this

  1. Strong ambition and belief in achieving that ambition is possible
  2. Day to day actions that utilize one’s sense of their best self/purpose
  3. Strong metric rewards and outcomes connected to actions taken
  4. Sense of autonomy
  5. Sense of extremely clear direction -connection large vision to day to day goals
  6. Optimal balance of moment to moment/ day to day skill vs. challenge-i.e. optimal flow state
  7. Having a massively transformative purpose behind one’s day to day actions

Here;s a book that covers some of this

In my experience, I was able to study hard and work productively all day long when I gave up on human relationships and the rest of the small things while enhancing my study intelligence and maximizing happy emotions. I kept thinking of phrases such as eating less(because eat a lot → sleeping) and trying to do what others don’t want to do, and make everything fun.

And I haven’t seen the tremendous productivity of that time again since various goals were created.

It’s hard to develop a sense of urgency unless you have a purpose. It would help if you started there. I’d start by asking questions such as:

  • What does success look like for me?
  • Why do I want this?
  • What would I be willing to give up to get it?
  • What can I do now to start moving in that direction?
  • What are some of the things I need to stop to get closer to my goal?

Especially in the first two questions, try to imagine what your life would be like if you achieved your goals. That should get you excited enough to get you moving. If it doesn’t, maybe it is not the right goal, and it needs refinement.

Also, once you have more clarity, I recommend breaking the journey into small steps and defining several milestones along the way. Make sure you do something to move towards achieving those milestones every day. Once you have momentum and start collecting (and celebrating) small successes, you’ll find it much easier to continue.

Finally, read about people that already have what you want. Those success stories should help you stay motivated, particularly when you hit a roadblock or when things are taking longer than you expected.
