Any worrying is over-worrying.
I have this issue as well, it’s something I either learned (or inherited) from my mother, depending on which side of the nature vs nurture fence the research supports this week. 
I’m still pondering what to do, but I’m leaning toward a new custom with DR4 (to get all of the stages) plus Wanted and Ascension… Not going to drag this thread off-topic with that, of course, but that’s where my thinking is at the moment.
As for non-sub options… meditation is a huge help. I can’t recommend the Z-Technique strongly enough… it’s so easy to use but also insanely effective. I’ve worked up to 45 minutes at a time, and when I come out of it I feel like I’ve been in a hot tub. Soooo relaxed.
