What do you think of Cynicism

Just a question, is cynicism a negative habit always ? And if yes, what sub who be the best to help fight or reduce cynicism ?

Diogenes thought cynicism was a bit of alright

Oh wait
you had a different meaning in mind?

Yep ! I have a friend who is always “cynical”. But few days ago he told me he wants to change as he is more and more isolated. Before he was proud of saying he can see the truth and accused us (his friends) to be very naive

A very comprehensive treatise can be found here:

So any sub that promotes positivity, self-esteem, self-love and compassion should help.
For example: SE LBFH CFW

If by cynicism you’re referring to the dictionary definitions involving the motivations of people, I think it is definitely a balancing act. An increasingly large number of people nowadays are only motivated by self interest, and are losing their morals and integrity. So being the opposite of a cynic nowadays can be dangerous.

I reckon an interesting combo could be LBFH + PCC to try and strike a balance. What say other folks?

I was thinking also about LBFH, as a starter sub

Maybe also Sanguine for more optimism

Depends on the person I guess. I know I used to swing way to far to the other side of the spectrum, always assuming other people would be honourable or unselfish, and it caused me problems with other people walking all over me or going behind my back, in one case giving my job to the girlfriend of a salesperson who was friends with my manager because they thought it would be cushy easy work. I ended up being told in private not to bother reapplying for my job because I wasn’t going to get it after the secondment ended (this was at a major tech firm with one of the most irresponsible self interested managers you could ever hope to meet, short of my first boss).

That’s why I suggested PCC. You don’t want to overcompensate to the positive. Allow some wiggle room for human nature and defeating bad behaviors.

Yes you are correct, to avoid the “nice guy syndrome”. But I will first talk to him about subliminals :joy: and it will be complicated to convince him, lets see

Too much optimism can make you dillusional and too much cynicism could lead to depression. The key is balance.

My definition of cynicism is a sense of skepticism regarding the ideals and intentions of individuals or groups.

I’d see it as a kind of ‘broken clock is accurate twice a day’ kind of situation.

When people’s apparent or expressed ideals or intentions are not as great as they seem or are different from what they seem, then cynicism can be helpful.

But often an attitude of cynicism is just an attempt to self-protect from the pain of potential disappointment. It’s not sophistication in those cases; it’s just fear-based avoidance. That’s where we get ideas like ‘Cynicism/sarcasm is the province of the weak’.

With that kind of attitude you’ll end up missing out on both disappointment and beauty.

Q-store modules like Virtue Series: Hope, Blue Skies, The Wonder, Gratitude Embodiment will help.

Main store programs such as Sanguine, Dragon Reborn, Revelation of Spirit, and Regeneration will also help.

RoS is actually a really good idea if @Avengers68 was trying to introduce someone new to subs for this purpose. I think it’s probably the most likely to embody the ideals of letting them have their own free will in rebalancing, and getting them to question their previous ideas rather than embody a particular ideal.

Genesis is made for the newbie, maybe it could be also an idea. We have so many files in SC to choose !

Genesis is probably ideal.

pretty much this. Having a grounding mechanism is also key, so you aren’t too swayed to one side and lose your centering

I didn’t know what cynicism is, so I googled it.

“an inclination to believe that people are motivated purely by self-interest.”

I would not hesitate to jump in front of bullets to protect a loved one. The motivation to do that is rooted in love, empathy, and a strong desire to ensure the safety and well-being of the person I care about.

Is the willingness to sacrifice one’s own safety and/or life for the benefit of another, merely self-interest?

The power of human incompetence dwarfs cynicism.

So, while we may be strongly motivated by self-interest, we will most frequently fail miserably at properly realizing that motivation. In fact, some of us are so incompetent at self-interest that we end up becoming great heroes, luminaries, and humanitarians.
