Is this something we listen to while we’re in a work session, or is it something we would do outside of focus sessions which will build towards better focus sessions later?

Both will suffice, depends on your goals and schedule as it develops the capacity for deep work and focus over time anyway.
There’s no requirement to run it right before focus sessions. That being said, for early runs, just to see how it is affecting you, I’d run it just before a task that you’re very familiar with (like your daily work duties) so that you can compare and contrast.
