I’ve seen a number of documentaries about gang members, crime bosses, drug lords, kingpins, etc. I’ve even talked with a few people who achieved similar positions such as one of the biggest drug dealers in certain areas of the USA.
When you’re up in the pyramid of power, there is always someone else who wants to take your place. Constantly looking over your shoulder, worrying about who might sell you out, making sure people obey orders, wondering if a new player is going to overtake you, chastising one of your crew because they’re drawing unwanted attention, etc.
It’s not what you think.
I recently listened to an interview with a woman who was the daughter of a boss who was so high up he was “at the table” so to speak. She said people ask her where all the money is. She said she didn’t know, that it never went to her, and she didn’t know what to think about where all that money is. It’s possible it got used up during his life for “expenses”. I don’t think this glamour that we see in the movies about criminal life is accurate. The money, women, VIP treatment… perhaps but I’m confident this glamour is not as fulfilling as we are led to believe, and there is a price.
