When discussing the meaning and context of a term, it is possible to do so lexically, as you have done here, by referring to a dictionary or other linguistic reference text. It is possible to do so etymologically. We may also proceed historically, culturally, colloquially, traditionally. Whatever perspective we choose will yield different meanings and open up different possible interpretations.
So, while it is a decent place to start, we can’t just take the dictionary definition of a term and act as though that captures and sums up all of its connotations and possible meanings and uses. Even if people ‘incorrectly’ use a term in a particular way for a long enough time, eventually the dictionary will be expanded to reflect this new usage.
I find a good way to cut through all of this kind of thing is to acknowledge the formal definition of a term, but to then just bravely and humbly take responsibility for what the term means to you and for how you intend to use it.
