Custom building mistakes

I thought this might be a good topic to get going. Not really an advice thread like the other topic on ZP customs. Just solely dedicated to your experiences building customs. I’ve got a lot of stuff I’ve learned. As a disclaimer this is entirely based on my experience so it’s not universal. But if I can help someone save money and frustration it’ll be worth it

  • Thinking if I just put in some healing/support modules it could offset my compatibility with the core I chose. It’s important for me to choose a core that I don’t immediately have hangups with.

  • Trying to build the best of the best. There are a lot of underrated modules on the q store. I was very tunnel visioned in thinking I had to build a custom in a certain way. Very often my habits led me to choosing modules that got me away from the very thing I needed to heal or work on

  • Getting excited on a new potential custom and not sleeping on it for at least a week before ordering. I am impulsive, when I decide I want something and I have the means to get it I need it now. But that clouds my judgement a lot. It leads me to think “yeah that core or module might be a little tough to work with, but I’m feeling pretty good about it” which is a very temporary thing. It’s not indicative of my base operating level of things I can handle.

  • Sticking to the same old formula for building a custom. I thought consistency would be good. That if I just tweaked it a bit surely this time I figured it out. Nope.

  • Sexy time modules. Unless that’s the core focus of the custom it is almost 100% always a mistake. The amount of hangups I have around that topic will derail anything else I’m working towards in that custom.

  • Kind of goes back to point number 1. Thinking I absolutely need a custom to bust through whatever blocks or stuck progress I have. The way I see it now if I don’t get much of anywhere with a standard title it means something else is wrong there that I need to address.

  • Piggybacking off of that, building a custom that seems more like an elaborate fantasy than something I can take actionable steps on. Obviously I want to push past my limits, but when something is too far it can trigger feelings of hopelessness that aren’t conducive to growth. Best to choose things that are actionable and possible then build from there.

So those are mine. If you’ve made any mistakes building your customs in the past post them here. Customs are advanced tools and to be quite honest out of every custom I’ve built I think I’ve missed the mark quite a bit.

I think you covered the main ones.

Maintain focus.

Have a clear set of objectives, and know how to know when your objectives are progressing and/or complete.

Getting input from others.

Thinking about it, then thinking some more.

I think it’s important to only put healing modules into healing customs because of the potential for the healing module to take precedence.

Making sure ZP is working well before considering ZPT or ZPT^2.

Use programs from the main shop that are oriented with your plans or goals first before ordering a custom.

Look over every module in the shop to see what might be best for you and your plans.

Making a list, then narrowing it down I think is better than trying to make a list at 20 maximum. Just make the list, and then narrow it.

Then when the list is final, check it again with your plan, and that each module is congruent with your plan.

How do you tackle building a brand new custom then? What do you do to list your dream modules and build the best custom?

This is wonderful advice. To expand on this: make your final decisions on a custom during a washout.

Because you never know what priority or area of focused might be uncovered during the middle of a cycle. With how rapid we are all changing on ZP, it’s good to have reached a stable baseline so that we aren’t clouded by recon when committing to a custom.
