Custom audio/gain mastering

When the Ultima line came out the gain/mastering on main store subs was increased due to meet requirements of the masked & ultrasonic combination inherent to the Ultima line. I noticed that Dragon Reborn is also louder than older titles (guessing it was built using the same presets). It doesn’t seem as though Q custom titles are subjected to the same final mastering settings, as they are still noticeably quieter in comparison (I bought a custom ~1 month ago). It’s already too late for any customs that have been built but it might be nice to have all things being equal going forward. Just a thought :slight_smile:

@SaintSovereign @Fire

Isn’t it only the mater of turning up your player?

Oh yeah it’s an easy end user fix.

That’s not too say it wouldn’t also be a quick easy fix on the development side. One small tweak on their end could make the user experience more fluid and seamless.

That’s true. Now if I wanted to stack DR with Mogul I’ll have to calibrate the volume of the latter since my listening pattern would be interlacing both titles (DRx1->Mogulx1->DRx1 and so on).

Can we just use some app to turn up the volume of the track permanently without destroying its efficacy or we’re condemned to turning up the volume manually every time?

In theory you could use a program like Audacity to measure the gains of both tracks and either make one louder or one quieter to match the other. However I’m not sure what effect that would have on the subs themselves since I’m unfamiliar with the build method. I do know from my personal experience in audio engineering/production that Limiter and Compression presets are very common in final masters and I suspect (although don’t know for sure) that @SaintSovereign and/or @Fire use a final preset for their tracks and simply haven’t moved it over to the Q building machine(s) yet.

Like now it’s really inconvenient if it comes to stacking DR with the other titles. I would rather have both tracks at the same volume for the obvious reason.

Thanks for your help. :slight_smile:

Yeah I have the same problem. DR st1 is currently the first track in my stack, then I run either one or two customs (depending on the day) which are much much quieter. Really all this means is that I have to adjust the volume, but it would be nice for all things to be equal going forward - which currently they are not. Not like I’m going to abandon SubClub over it or anything, it’s a mild inconvenience at worst but it’s something that, if fixed, would make the user experience that much easier/enjoyable.

To me it’s a huge inconvenience since I listen to subs at night/sleeping so I cannot adjust it every time the track changes. I hope they’ll resolve it or at least they will tell us if it’s ok to change the volume by editing the file.

Ah yes, for night listening that would be incredibly inconvenient as I find DR played at a good/reasonable volume is MUCH too quiet a setting to hear a Q custom properly on my setup

We’re looking into this.

Any news? Or could I just increase the volume using an editing program?

@Baphomet
I’ve solved the issue using mp3Gain. It doesn’t decode anything just instills the information about the volume the track/ file should be played at. It works only with devices which use Replay Gain. You can change that information back to default using the very same application.

Interesting! I’m still weary of editing the masters in any way. Try it and if you’re still getting results then great. I’m okay adjusting the volume for now :stuck_out_tongue: haha
