@Sungaze you sound like a guru ? a holy man ?
That would be ambition. Ego keeps people poor, as well.
Ego is subtle.
Ambition: ‘I plan to become wealthy.’
Ego: ‘I’m gonna become stupid rich, so that others can look up to me and I can look down on people.’
I don’t know… I do?
Ego is a sense of self that is generated by a bunch of thoughts/emotions/sensations bundled together and does not exist apart from them. If you go looking for yourself in your direct experience, you don’t find anything you can call “I” or “me”, all you find is thoughts, emotions, sensations.
Ego is essentially a mentally generated image of who you are, and your place in the world.
A father to your children with this attributes, a nickname with other attributes to your friend circle, a coach in your football team, a renowned inventor in a certain industry, it’s all identities much like costumes you wear to play a role within a society of “minds”.
Your ego also generates the chemicals in your body.
With most psychological disorders what they are attempting to do is to reconcile intense negative experiences associated with a person his limited identity and reconcile it.
See, this much we all have to understand is with subliminal programming you are transforming your Ego and as such parts of your identity.
Here on the forum I’m Amor, I was Hermit before, both of them have certain experiences associated with them; some pleasant others less so. In society, we all get named and identified with this name, furthermore we can be classified as a doctor, a nurse, a psychologist, a police officer etc and this adds onto our identity and as we “earn” these names we can start playing these roles in society.
What’s more interesting is the understanding that, and especially in the USA, how the whole system is based on that — go study the Justice system, how Law works, the spelling used, what roles are being played, etc
Anyway, I’m going off-topic but essentially Ego is of importance in a 3 and 4 dimensional space, in higher densities it does not exist.
It’s much like a body, temporal, something that is used and taken on momentarily but shed as it’s purpose has ended.
With Spiritual traditions it’s often the case where the initiate purifies his being and by certain ways and practises brings his Higher Self, that part of him who lives in the higher dimensions down onto earth, and bring the ego under the command of that Higher Self, in other words you may become a conscious individual instead of a “program”, ego is a program because it controls your behaviour a conscious individual is a being.
Truth be told the ego is a fragile thing and it can work against you if your awareness is under it’s will.
To bring it under your control is the way of the Magus.
There are two parts of consciousness. There is the string of thoughts that goes through your head, and there is the metacognitive part that is able (with training) to look at the thoughts with detachment and challenge them. The ego is the thing that thinks, it feels like your identity, feels like “who you are.” The thing that’s sits above or behind the thoughts is the metacognition and possibly your “true self.”
That’s how I see it. Basically ego is the identity and string of thoughts that we get lost in. Something like that.
Well I’ll be honest I don’t get it lol.
To me it just sounds like a concept for a state of human consciousness that naturally occurs.
The more I think about it the less clear it is what having an awareness of ego can even do for you self growth wise. It would be like being more in tune to a biological function of your body. Wouldn’t the creation of the term ego itself be a form of ego? It can all seem a bit like an infinite loop within itself.
Your False Self
That’s pretty much exactly right. It’s very much like being more in tune with a biological function.
We just need to add one point: Familiarity with physiological functions in their neutral and normal states is the foundation for evaluating functional imbalances. It’s pretty much the way we understand health and ill health.
Take the heart beat. On most good days, your simple understanding of the fact that you have a cardiac muscle that pumps blood in your body will hopefully not make a dramatic difference to your day. It’s not as though you’re responsible for controlling it from minute to minute. Thank goodness (and evolution) it pretty much goes along automatically.
But what if a person develops tachycardia (very rapid heartbeat) or bradycardia (very slow heartbeat)? Now that knowledge of the ordinary heartbeat and what it means suddenly becomes pretty freaking crucial.
Understanding neutrality allows us to evaluate excess and deficiency. Understanding balance allows us to perceive imbalance.
The same is true of the ego.
By understanding ego in its “unremarkable”, neutral, balanced expression, you are then better able to recognize when it’s excessive or deficient.
The unbalanced ‘ego’ is at the heart of many of the dysfunctions that we associate with the need for ‘growth’.
Oh the irony of me trying to understand the concept of ego through the very same mechanism you’ve described here. My all or nothing thinking got the better of me and lost the nuance of what that perception could hold value wise. Thanks
It’s your mental scoreboard. Question is… with or without cheating?
Ego is that part of me that thinks that you actually asked for my personal opinion … that you care what good old Simon thinks.
Its the part that’s noticing that there are too many thats in these two sentences, and how that will reflect poorly on my linguistic ability.
Ego is me thinking that I am special, that everything going on is somehow about me, and everything I do must be cool, smart, new and must stand out – be different from all the posts above.
And I think I have accomplished that, and my ego is satisfied.
I use the Ego to motivate myself … to perform … to be cool, smart, different, special … where that’s helpful.
I ask it to chill … where doing all that would be detrimental.
It’s a fun game that’s always on.
Thank you all for the response. I always love it when a big part of the community starts to philosophize together about specific topics. The funny thing about this topic is that I agree with what everybody is saying. It all makes sense but from a different point of view.
For me, Ego is the part of you that tries to protect you from yourself (Your most true self). The main word is protect. It tries to protect you because it loves you and wants you to be alright in this world. It doesn’t understand that it’s protecting you from being whole and authentic. I think that’s what most spiritual teachers mean by Surrender. That you have to learn how to surrender the ego so that you can become closer to thyself.
I think the ego is the guide to enlightenment. I always thought it was something bad, but it’s not.
It’s the part that loves you the most.
In my opinion, Ego is all woo-woo lol
Your experiences would say different…
After subliminal use reportedly your life has dramatically changed as you described in many of your posts.
You changed your Ego, and with it your attitude and eventually your life.
Considering this it would be most foolish to dismiss it.
Ego is just the garment your consciousness takes on to give it some shape and form within a world that is structured.
look mate, I don’t understand all this ego wego things
only garment I wear is underwear
Caveman don’t understand spiritual… only sub, action-take, pump, smash and monch
