When your blood calcium levels drop, the parathyroid glands release PTH (Parathyroid Hormone), which signals specialized cells to âmineâ the bone for calcium, essentially sacrificing a bit of density to keep your heart and nerves running. Conversely, when calcium is or abundant, the thyroid releases Calcitonin, which acts as a âstopâ sign for bone resorption, helping to lock those minerals back into the skeletal matrix.
